Frequently Asked Questions About IP Addresses & Geolocation
What is a Public IP address?
A Public IP (Internet Protocol) address is a unique numerical label assigned to your internet connection by your Internet Service Provider (ISP). Every device accessing the World Wide Web routes its outbound traffic through this address so remote web servers know where to send requested web pages and data back.
Why does my IP location show a neighboring city or town?
IP geolocation is based on ISP routing infrastructure rather than GPS coordinates. Most residential ISPs aggregate user traffic at regional central routing hubs (Points of Presence or POPs). Consequently, the detected location reflects the regional data center routing your traffic, usually within a few miles of your actual physical location.
What is the difference between IPv4 and IPv6?
IPv4 uses 32-bit addresses formatted as four decimal numbers separated by dots (e.g. 198.51.100.42), supporting approximately 4.3 billion unique addresses. IPv6 is the newer standard using 128-bit hexadecimal addresses (e.g. 2001:0db8:85a3::8a2e:0370:7334), providing trillions of addresses to accommodate modern connected devices.
How can I change or hide my Public IP address?
You can change or mask your public IP address by:
- Using a Virtual Private Network (VPN): Encrypts your connection and masks your true IP with the VPN server's IP.
- Restarting your Modem/Router: Power cycling your modem for 5–10 minutes often triggers your ISP's DHCP server to lease a new dynamic public IP address.
- Using a Proxy Server: Reroutes browser traffic through an intermediary proxy server.
