Regular firmware updates improve security and fix known bugs and disconnection issues.
Step 1: Download the Correct EX6420 Firmware File
- On a computer, go to the official NETGEAR Support / Download Center.
- Search for your model: EX6420 and open the Downloads section.
- Download the latest firmware ZIP file for EX6420 to a convenient location (for example, your desktop).
- Unzip the file and locate the firmware file ending in
.chkor.img.
Step 2: Connect Directly to the EX6420
- Ensure the EX6420 is powered on with a solid Power LED.
- Connect a computer to the extender via WiFi (its extended SSID) or Ethernet if available.
- Disable VPNs or proxies that might block the management page.
Step 3: Log In to the EX6420 Dashboard
- Open a browser and go to http://mywifiext.net or 192.168.1.250.
- Log in with your extender admin username (usually admin) and the admin password you set during setup.
Step 4: Upload the Firmware File
- Navigate to Settings > Firmware Update or Maintenance > Firmware Upgrade in the dashboard.
- Click Browse / Choose File and select the firmware file you unzipped in Step 1.
- Click Upload to start the firmware update.
Important: Do not unplug the extender, close the browser, or turn off your router while the firmware is uploading and installing.
Step 5: Wait for Reboot and Confirm Version
- Wait for the EX6420 to reboot; the Power LED will turn solid again when ready.
- Log back into the dashboard and check the firmware version on the Status or Update page to confirm it matches the latest release.
Step 6: Re-test Coverage
- Test WiFi in key rooms to ensure speed and stability feel normal or improved.
- If issues appear, perform a soft reset, verify placement, and recheck router settings.
